Brooklyn Russians stand with plane crash victims

The tragedy took the lives of 217 passengers, including 25 children, and seven crew members, according to officials.

The passenger airliner that crashed Saturday in a remote part of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, killing all 224 people onboard, hit home for the Russian residents of Brooklyn.

“It’s a horrible accident, and all my sympathy is with the families,” said Valentina Sukhanova, who moved to Brighton Beach from Moscow three months ago. “Us Russians in America need to stand with our fellow Russians in this.”

The flight was returning to St. Petersburg, Russia, from an Egyptian vacation spot on the Red Sea popular among Russians.

“It’s a tragedy for the families. People are gone forever,” said Natalia Stepanova, visiting New York from St. Petersburg.

Stepanova said she had not yet heard anything from her own friends and family back home about the horrific crash. “But I know I will hear a lot about it when I come home,” she said, pointing out that she was flying home to St. Petersburg Saturday night.
