Giants plan to work out Stevie Brown after release by Texans

It was seemingly too good to be true. The Houston Texans released former Giants safety Stevie Brown on Friday. And his old team sure is desperate for safety help.

But don’t necessarily count on what seems like a logical reunion. According to his agent, there are “a number of teams” in the mix for Brown.

That likely won’t prevent the Giants from taking a look, though. A team source confirmed that the Giants are hoping to bring in the 28-year-old Brown for a workout early this week, though his agent said a visit has not been arranged “yet”. The fact that they’re interested is hardly surprising given the deterioration of their safety situation this summer. They have already lost three safeties – Bennett Jackson, Mykkele Thompson and Justin Currie – for the season. And a fourth – Nat Berhe – may be lost too after undergoing surgery on his calf on Saturday.

Those injuries have left them with a ridiculously thin roster at that position. Their healthiest two safeties are Jeromy Miles and Brandon Meriweather, both of whom joined the Giants within the last seven weeks.

Then there’s Cooper Taylor, who has been in and out of the lineup with injuries this summer, and second-round pick Landon Collins, who is expected to play against the Jets Saturday night after missing last week’s game with a sprained MCL.

At least Brown is apparently healthy. According to an NFL source, the Texans released him because they knew he wouldn’t make their team and they wanted to give him a chance to sign somewhere else. He had signed a one-year, $ 3 million deal with the Texans in April after four seasons with the Giants.

The Giants, according to a source, were only interested bringing Brown back during the offseason on a veteran minimum deal.

Brown became a key part of the Giants’ defense with eight interceptions in 2012. But he missed the entire 2013 season with a torn ACL. When he returned in 2014 he clearly wasn’t the same player and didn’t pick off a single pass while starting in eight and playing in all 16 games.
