LeBron James wants Joe Johnson to join Cavaliers

LeBron James already is making his pitch for bought-out former Nets All-Star Joe Johnson to join the Cavaliers.

“He knows that we want him,” James, a former Team USA teammate of Johnson’s, told reporters before Friday’s game in Toronto. “If he decides to come (to Cleveland), it’d be great. But if not, we’ll continue to move on with what we have.”

“I mean, he’s a great piece for any team and if we’re lucky enough to get him, he brings something to us. If not, we have enough here to compete.”

If Johnson clears waivers on Saturday, Cleveland (the East leaders at 41-15) only can offer the $ 1.5 million veteran’s minimum for Johnson based on their salary-cap situation. According to ESPN, Atlanta, Boston, Houston, Miami, Oklahoma City and Toronto also are interested in the seven-time All-Star swingman, and several of those teams can offer Johnson more than the veteran’s minimum.

Johnson reached a buyout with Brooklyn on Thursday for the remainder of his $ 24.9 million salary. New GM Sean Marks said in a radio interview that the team recouped $ 3 million in the agreement.

“We got a veteran ball group and we know what we want to do, and I think playing against Joe and competing against him, I think he’s smart enough to be able to come in here and just fit right into the flow of things,” James said.

Cavs coach Tyronn Lue also was a teammate of Johnson’s with Atlanta from 2004-08.

“I played with his crazy a– for four years,” Lue said. “He’s a great guy.”
